Enlisted and was mustered in with 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry at Harrisburg PA on 20 Apr 1861; honorably discharged with company on 30 Jul 1861. Re-enlisted at Gettysburg on 11 Aug 1862; mustered in with Co. I, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry at Carlisle PA on 22 Aug 1862; transferred to Co. E, date unknown; honorably discharged with company on 21 Jun 1865.

The son of James & Margaret (McCurdy) Pierce, in 1860 he was a butcher living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

He married Grace Ziegler and fathered James Edward (b. 08/17/73). For a time, he worked as a clerk for the Census Bureau in Washington DC, but by 1890 was back home in Gettysburg. On February 1, 1892, he entered the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Hampton VA, where he died.
