A well-known Cass County couple was fatally injured in a car-truck crash at W. Roselawn Ave. and U.S. 24 shortly after 2 p.m. Monday. Killed instantly was the driver of the car. Mrs. Elizabeth Berkshire, 69, of Rt. 6. Her husband, Claude G. Berkshire, 76, died three hours later at Memorial Hospital of a fractured skull and a punctured lung. Two witnesses said Mrs. Berkshire, going south on W. Rosciawn Drive, pulled out onto U.S. 24 in front of a westbound semitrailer driven by Eugene Hull. 39, of Rt. 3, Angola. The death boosted the Cass County traffic fatality toll for 1967 to seven, three of which have occurred within the city limits. At this time last year the county had recorded 15 traffic fatalities. The Berkshire auto was spun three-quarters of the way around by the impact. Both occupants were thrown out the left front door, and Mrs. Berkshire was dragged approximately 80 feet by the truck. Hull said the impact knocked out his steering and the rig jackknifed, the front wheels coming to rest only a few feet from the gasoline pumps of the Imperial service station at the Eastgate entrance. City police and Coroner Edward Drerup investigated the crash, which snarled traffic for about an hour and a half. The fire department was called to wash oil and gasoline from the pavement.
