Sergeant Major Roy E. Barnhart, 59, of Locust Lane, Milton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 13, 2014, at his home. Born in Danville, on July 12, 1955, he was the son of Joyce (Gass) Barnhart of Danville, and the late Howard E. Barnhart Jr. He was married to the former Cynthia M. Keister who survives. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda A. (Steigerwalt) Barnhart.

Roy graduated from Danville High School/Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech in 1973 and worked as a welder at ACF in Milton. He served on active duty in the United States Army for four years: October 1974 through October 1979 as an Avionic Mechanic; joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1985, serving as a Radioman and Non Commission Officer in the Headquarters Company 3rd 103rd Infantry Regiment, Lewisburg, from April 1985 through June 1995; from June 1995 through February 2003, served as Battalion Commo Section Chief for the 3rd 103rd Armor Battalion in Lewisburg; from February 2003 thru March 2008, served as Senior Signal Support NCO in Headquarters Battery, 1st 109th Field Artillery Battalion, Wilkes-Barre; from March 2008 thru November 2008, served with the 3rd 103rd Armor in Afghanistan; from November 2008 through February 2009, served as Commo Section Chief in the Headquarters Battery, 1st 109th Field Artillery Battalion, Wilkes-Barre; from February 2009 thru August 2014, served as Signal Support System Chief in Headquarters Company 55th Armor Brigade Combat Team. Sergeant Major Barnhart had deployed to combat in Afghanistan, and had oversea deployments to Bulgaria, Kosovo, Germany and Kuwait. He also participated in Operation Jump Start on the Southern United States border. His military awards and decorations include: Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, Air Force Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal 2 Award, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with numeral # 3 and M Device, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Bronze Hour Glass, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Service Ribbon, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, NATO Medal with Bronze Service Star, Non Commissioned Officers Prof Development Ribbon with numeral #3, Pennsylvania Commendation Medal, Pennsylvania General Thomas J. Stewart Medal, Pennsylvania Major General R. White Jr. Medal Pennsylvania Service Ribbon, Pennsylvania 20-Year Service Medal with One Silver Star, Arizona Community Service Award.

Roy was a member of Christ Wesleyan Church in Milton. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, both in Milton. Roy could fix or build anything. He liked to hunt and fish. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and he liked to travel, especially to Atlantic City.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; his mother, Joyce (Gass) Barnhart, of Danville; two step daughters: Judy Magliane of North Carolina and Christina Bowen and her husband, Travis, of Milton; a brother and sister-in-law: Howard III and Sue Barnhart of Sunbury; three sisters and two brothers-in-law: Letitia and Robert Fest of Bloomsburg; Susan and Bill Hess of Danville; and Gloria Olson of Danville; and two granddaughters: Chryslynn Magliane and Alexia Bowen.

Roy was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda (Steigerwalt) Barnhart; his father, Howard; his daughter, Gina Barnhart; and his son, Roy Barnhart Jr.

Friends and relatives will be received on Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 10-11 a.m. at the Christ Wesleyan Church, 363 Stamm Rd., Milton, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ken Paulhamus officiating. Burial with full Military honors will be in Harmony Cemetery, Milton
