Larry Dean Howard, age 73, of Aurora, Missouri passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014 while working cattle in the pasture. He was born October 9, 1940 in Villisca, Iowa, the son of the late Adelbert "Shorty" and Lola (Munson) Howard. Larry grew up in southwest Iowa and lived in various places before settling in Lawrence County in 1993. He retired from the Aurora R-8 School district in 2003, where he worked as a custodian at the Robinson Elementary School.
Larry worked as a welder, in construction, was a lumberjack and a cowboy, He enjoyed playing country/western music and his claim to fame was playing backup for Ernest Tubb. He was a member of the Elm Branch Christian Church, American Quarter Horse Association, the Arabian Horse Association and the Model A Club. Larry loved fast cars and motorcycles and spending time with his family.
On February 14, 1986, he married Linda Bowlin in Morgan, Missouri. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 28 years, Linda; two children, Ellis "Skip" Howard and his wife, Melissa, and Chris Howard of Shenandoah, Iowa; three step-children: Jennifer Lewandowski and Doug Howard of Saint Joseph, Missouri and Nikki Langley and her husband, Terry, of Aurora; three sisters, Pat Doss of Clarinda, Iowa, Judy Miller of Saint Joseph, Missouri and Rita Howard of Atchison, Kansas; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His mother and step-father, Lola and Guy Kerns, father "Shorty" Howard, daughter, Sherry Burchett, son, Larry Howard, Jr. and sister, Joan Beason, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Elm Branch Christian Church. Larry will be interred at the Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Missouri at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Elm Branch Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
