His parents were Frederick Thorne and Dora Virginia Allen. He married Nannie Laura Dotson July 2, 1917 in Mogollon, New Mexico. He worked for a time as a steam shovel operator in the Santa Rita Copper Mine in New Mexico, and later was a truck farmer nearby. He moved his family to Los Angeles, California about 1927, where he bought and operated the Silver Springs Dairy until the Great Depression. He worked for a time in the Works Project Administration (WPA) in Long Beach, California. After America's entry into WWII he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp., in Burbank, California, until he retired. He was a passionate Democrat and union member.
