He came west in 1852 with his son, Henry Franklin Hall. They traveled around Cape Horn; his wife Lucy Allen Hall and their two daughters, Lucy and Susan, came later, traveling to Panama, crossing the isthmus and then by ship to San Francisco.
They settled in Ione, Amador County where he established the first grist mill in the town.
He survived his wife and daughters; his son, Henry died in 1893.
He was living with his daughter Lucy in Berkeley when he died.
