Lorene was born in Kentucky to Gus Wells and Alice Miller Wells. Her father died when Lorene was very young, leaving her and her mother and sister, Bernice, on their own. They lived with Alice's parents for awhile, and moved with them to Oklahoma around 1907. They returned to Kentucky in 1910, but Lorene later moved back to Oklahoma to help her grandfather on the farm.
She married James Hobart Moore in 1918, and they had four children. They were later divorced.
