Matthews Cove was settled by Walker Matthews in the early part of the 1800's. He came while this area was still Cherokee lands (before 1819).
After living on the land, building his home, growing his crops and marrying Luvina Isbell, he purchased the land when it was put up for sale in 1831.
Walker and his family farmed the land until his death in 1860. He was buried in the family cemetery in the middle of the cove. His sons continued farming the land until, as rumor has it, the land was lost during the 1930's depression.
The cove, even today is still one of the most remote areas of Jackson County. Reachable by a two mile long rough dirt road. Until just a few years ago a creek had to be foarded to gain access and there was a swinging foot bridge across Big Coon creek for those walking.
