Betty R. (Kovak) Borkhus was called to heaven by God on Friday, January 18th, at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital.
When recently asked about her life, Betty immediately stated that she had a wonderful, long life. Having the opportunity to watch her children and grandchildren grow into adults and to further experience the joy of her great-grandchildren and their budding lives and personalities provided her with abundant pleasure. Betty will be missed by all of her family and friends. She was the perfect lady, never failing to dress up each day. Every day was precious to her and she lived a full life until her health began to fail in the last months. Never giving up, her sharp mind and strength of being, she held onto the hope daily that she would, once again, triumph over death.
Betty was married to Lloyd F. Borkhus on July 1, 1940 and they enjoyed 64 years together until Lloyd's death on May 19, 2004. An accomplished homemaker, Betty always welcomed all in to her home. She never failed to be the hostess with the mostest…cooking delicious meals and nurturing all who came into her life. A more generous spirit will not be found. She loved her time residing at Lake Oaks and her many friends, and never passed up an opportunity to play her "Manipulation" card game!
Survived by devoted daughter, Melanie Knoell of Racine, and her family: Dr. Lyndsay (Dr. Wendy) Knoell and children Emma, Wyatt, and Gretta of Racine; Dr. Alex (Dr. Sara) and children Jackson and Ellie Kate of Henderson, TN; Hilary (Dave) Bogan and children Brittany, Branden and Parker of Racine; Max (Amanda) Knoell and children Nathan, Olivia, Spencer and Violette of Racine. Devoted daughter and tireless companion Cindy (Dan) Riegelman of Racine and their family: Amy (Doug) Basile of Wauwatosa, WI and children Avery and Vance; Michael (Liesl) Riegelman of Boston, MA; Neil (Erica) Riegelman of Wauwatosa, WI. Son Larry (Claire) Borkhus of Wauwatosa, WI and their family: Jacob, Joseph, Daniel, Elizabeth, and Ann (Todd) and children Chris, Nathaniel, and Cheyne. The late Karen (Gary) Schoening formally of Glenwood, IA and their children: Allison (Dan) Welz and children Madeline, Ryan, and Ethan of Elmhurt, IL; Gina Schoening of Birmingham, AL; Travis Schoening of Chicago, IL.
Betty is survived by many dear friends, fellow members of the Sons of Norway, and several nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by her loving husband Lloyd, daughter Karen, four sisters, and 2 brothers.
