She was born one of 8 children to Thomas and Frances Royal McCabe near the town of St Thomas, Ontario, Canada. When her mother died , her alcoholic father farmed out the children to neighbors. She immigrated to Chicago in 1901, joining her younger sister Jane in a boarding house on Erie Street.
She was a talented seamstress who eventually managed the ladies coat department at the large Chicago department store, Chas. A.Stevens and Co. She sewed beautiful clothes for herself, her grandnieces and their dolls. She helped care for the 3 young children of her nephew, the Rev. Guy Fansher, after the death of his wife. He in turn, cared for her when she suffered from dementia near the end of her life.
