William Albee was born on 22 Feb 1830, in Colchester, Delaware Co, NY, the second of ten children to bless the marriage of John Albee and Mary Ann Ball.

He served his country very early in the Civil War, enlisting on 24 Oct 1861 at Rockland, Sullivan Co, NY as a Private in the 8th Independent Battery of the Light (Field) Artillery. He mustered in on 30 Oct 1861 and saw intense action at the Battle of Fair Oaks. He was discharged on 13 Sep 1863 with a disability discharge.

Before the war, William was a strong able bodied young man, but he never fully recovered from his wartime disability, performing only occasional light labor.

William died in 1927 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, somewhere between the ages of 91 and 97. He would have been born in 1830, per his age of 33 on his Draft Registration on 1 Jul 1863 and the Federal Census Reports of 1860 (30), 1880 (50), 1910 (80). According to his gravestone he was born in 1833 and per the Muster Rolls of Rockland, Sullivan Co, NY dated 24 Oct 1861 his age is listed as 25 giving him a year of birth of 1836.
