Jesse was a son of Richard Cross and Calista Minerva Rogers. He married Nancy Melissa Hooper, daughter of David Hooper and Elizabeth Devor, on 2 Oct 1881 in Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. They had two sons, Nathan Beech Cross and Benjamin Rogers Cross. He received his education at the Indiana School for the Deaf and also took three years advance study at the National Deaf Mute College in Washington, D. C.
