Fred was the son of Theodore and Addie (O'Neill) Risch. He married Dorothy Wilson on September 18, 1925. They had four children. He worked for the Janesville newspaper and then the Rockford papers and finally the Chicago Tribune. He retired in 1973. He and his wife operated Century Farm Antiques in Afton, Wisconsin.
