Nathan died at the age of 68 years and was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in the 18th Wisconsin Infantry.

Nathan married Catherine WOLFORD and they had six living children.

Nathan Bankes fought at the Battle of Shiloh and was part of General Prentiss' Division that mounted the famous resistance known as the "Hornet's Nest". Captain Layne, commander of Company C (in which Bankes served) was captured by the rebel army when General Prentiss finally surrendered.
