Charles M. Keefer could be the child of Samuel Keefer and grandson of George Keefer and Polly Hough.

Per the 1850 census record, Charles M. Keefer, born in 1849 was living with his parents in Sharon, Mercer, Penn.

In reference to the 1860 census record, Charles M. Keefer, born in 1849 is residing with William and Anna Barbara (Furst) Mounts in Rock Island, Ill.

In the 1865 census record, Charles is living with John Jacob Furst and his wife. John was the brother-in-law of William Mounts. It appears from census records that Mr. Mounts and his wife Anna Barbara had 2 children and it's possible they could not afford to care for Charles. John Furst and his wife did not have their first child until sometime in 1865 so it's likely they were able to care for Charles.

By 1870 Charles is a boarder, living in Lewistown with the Standard family.

In reference to the 1880 census, it shows Charles year of birth is about 1850 and parents place of birth is listed as Penn.

Interesting to note is the middle initial "M" for Charles. Could his mother's maiden name have been Mounts. Did William Mounts have a sister named Mary Keefer?

Something happened to Samuel Keefer and his family between 1850-1860. Is it possible that Charles M. Keefer that lived with the Mounts in 1860 be the son of Samuel and Mary Keefer?

Charles married Cora Smith on 19 Apr 1877 in Fulton, Il. His first child was named Otis Mounts Keefer.

The year of birth on the headstone is likely inaccurate for Charles. The 1880 census records confirms Charles was born before 1851. It's possible the family did not know.

It must have been difficult for Charles being raised with no parents. If this is the son of Samuel Keefer- why didn't he go to live with Samuel's siblings (Nancy Williams, Matilda Truesdale or Charles B. Keefer)? If Mary Keefer was the sister of William Mounts, it may have been the wishes of Mary to have her son go to live with her family. All speculation at this point.

Charles and Cora must have had problems along the way and divorced. Cora married William Wilmington in Dec 1896 with his two children. Charles remained in Bloomington, Il.

Charles and Cora had these children: Otis Mounts, Grace, Mabel Pearl, Frederick Jacob and Lester Gordon.

The Keefer name is often misspelled and extended kin have various spellings. Relatives from George Keefer's line often used both Keefer and Keifer.

Summary: I believe this is the child of Samuel Keefer. More research needs to be completed to confirm this is accurate. A death certificate may reveal the parents names, however, he was young when his parents passed away. Did he know or remember their names? The informant for death data was likely his daughter. Would she know who the parents were?
