Robert J. "Bob" Johnson, 81, of Onawa died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Creighton Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Robert was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Duncan A. and Lillian (Butterfield) Johnson. He attended rural school in Palo Alto, County, Iowa, graduating from Emmetsburg High School and Junior College.

He married Esther M. Johnson on March 18, 1946, in Cylinder, Iowa. He farmed near Cylinder before moving his family to Onawa in 1961, where he continued to farm. He retired in 1985. He served as Monona County commissioner for seven years.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved nature, the changing seasons and golfing.

Survivors include his wife, of 57 years, Esther; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Bruce Jensen of Mason City, Iowa, and Sandy and Marty McGrane of Madison, S.D.; a son and his wife, Steve and Lynn Johnson of Arlington, Neb.; 10 grandchildren, Sarah and Matt Jensen, Mark, Danny, Molly, Kelly and Maura McGrane and Jordan, Taylor and Riley Johnson; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marion Erbe and Elvena Benson; and four brothers, Donald, Ronald, Max and Ross.

Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church or Onawa Public Library Capital Campaign.
