Arthur was the son of James Monroe Ingalls and Elizabeth Hannah (Jane) Niles. He died of yellow fever. His mother had died of yellow fever three days earlier. (Note: James Monroe Ingalls was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the army. He was an artillary officer & his ballistic tables were used for over 100 years.)
