Joe Ellis Connelly

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joe Ellis Connelly, “Joe Daddy,” in the early hours of August 2, 2014, due to complications from lymphoma.
Joe was born on July 10, 1931, in Cogan House, Pennsylvania, to Clyde and Rella Connelly. He married Mary Ann Patterson on November 12, 1954, nearly sixty years ago. They raised four children in an active military life of twenty-six years. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars in which he earned the Bronze Star Medal. In 1976, Joe retired as Master Sergeant from the Air Force in Austin, Texas. He then worked twenty years at the Veterans Administration where he developed many lifelong friendships.
Joe was a loving family man who valued the importance of a close-knit family. He enjoyed telling jokes, rooting for the New York Yankees, reading the newspaper cover-to-cover, and singing pop songs of his generation. He loved eating chili from Wendy’s, ribs from The Green Mesquite BBQ, chicken-fried steak from Hill’s Café, and ice cream of any flavor. Joe was a Mason and member of the VFW. He spent countless hours delivering Meals on Wheels with his dear friend, Gabe Garcia. He regularly donated blood, even reaching the “7 Gallon Club.” One of his favorite keepsakes was his hiking stick that he used to climb Mt. Fuji on three different occasions. He was proud of his Irish heritage and on St. Patrick’s Day would say, “With a name like Connelly, you don’t have to wear green!” His good Irish friend, Paul Aaron, would agree.
He is survived by his beautiful wife, Mary Ann Connelly, and daughters Barbara Burleson (husband Rick), Kathleen Hornsby (husband Ralph), and Amy Coffman. He adored his ten grandchildren and great-granddaughter, and they adored their Paw Paw, too. His two wonderful sisters, Naomi Horner and Ruth Landon, reside in Williamsport, PA. He is predeceased by his son, Raymond Connelly, and his two brothers, Paul and John Connelly.
A military funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on August 23, 2014, in Joe’s honor at the Cogan House Christian Church in PA.
His family wishes to thank the management and staff of Englewood Estates where Joe lived for the past ten years; Halo Senior Care, especially Brandy and Sarah; the many doctors and nurses of Seton Medical Center in Austin; and a very special thank you to Bellcoa Home Health Services, especially his aide, Raymond, who became Joe’s dear friend.
Joe will be greatly missed and will forever live in our hearts.
