Kenneth A. Runkle, 90, of Lafayette, passed away at home at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014. Born June 6, 1924 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Floyd A. and Ethel L. (Primmer) Runkle. Ken was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. From 1942 to 1946 he honorably served with the United States Marine Corp. He served with the 5th Marine Division during WWII in Iwo Jima.
Kenneth married Marilyn Dalrymple on June 22, 1946 in Lafayette. She preceded him in death on December 3, 2005. He was a member of the Local Union #215 for 68 years, of which 21 years he was a business agent. His memberships included American Legion Post #11, VFW Post #1154, Marine Paratroopers Association, Order of Purple Heart, Midwest Tool Collectors Association, Early American Industries Association, and the Redevelopment Commission in Lafayette for 30 years. He was on the first Gold Star Honor Flight to the war memorial in Washington, D.C. He enjoyed many fishing trips with the entire family, mushroom hunting, harvesting black walnuts, making punched Revere lanterns, collecting antique carpenter tools and was a Master Woodworking Craftsman. He and his wife had traveled to all 50 states and most countries in the world, including Iwo Jima for the 50th anniversary of the invasion. Kenneth enjoyed helping family and friends in whatever tasks needed, including building and fixing things for St. Lawrence.
Kenneth is survived by three daughters, Barbara Webster (husband, Hal) of West Lafayette, Patricia Mull (husband, Don) of Lafayette, and Katherine Runkle of San Diego, CA, 19 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James Runkle, a brother Floyd Runkle, and two sisters Norma Runkle and Maxine Blickenstaff.
