BENJAMIN H. THOMAS DIES AT MIAMI, FLA.
Funeral services will be held at the Flinn & Henderson funeral parlors, Wednesday afternoon for Benjamin Harrison Thomas, age 38, son of William and Martha Thomas, and a former resident of Franklin, who died at his home in Miami, Fla., last Thursday, following an illness of several months. The body was expected to arrive in Franklin sometime Tuesday.
[Mr.] Thomas suffered a nervous breakdown last fall and had been in a serious condition since that time and death followed, other complications developing as a result of the nerve trouble. He had lived in Franklin during his boyhood and had spent the summer months with his parents here, following his retirement from 10 years' service in the United States army. During his residence here and in Florida, he had been engaged in painting and construction work and had a number of close friends.
The funeral service Wednesday will be in charge of the Franklin American Legion post, of which he was a member, being enrolled in the Miami post, and the Legion burial ritual will be given at the grave in Greenlawn cemetery. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Knights of Pythias Lodge at Miami and of the Methodist church.
Enlisted When 18 ----
Benjamin Thomas was born in Bartholomew county, Feb. 19, 1889, and came with his parents to Franklin 10 years later. He attended the Franklin schools and united with the Methodist church here. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States army, serving three years in the Coast Artillery and re-enlisting for four years service in the Panama Canal Zone. At the beginning of the World War he again enlisted and served for three years. During the first part of the conflict, he served as an instruction officer, drilling recruits, and later was sent to France.
His company was assigned to duty in the front line and were ready to take their position when the Armistice was declared and the company was returned to the United States. Following his return, he received an honorable discharge from the army and returned to Franklin and later went to Florida, where he spent the winter months. His liking for the military life was inherited from his father, William Thomas, who served in the Civil War and is a member of the Franklin G.A.R. post, and each of the brothers saw service during the Spanish-American and World wars.
Following his return from the army, he was united in marriage to Miss Cleah Blanch Reed, of Columbus, and the widow and one daughter survive. He is also survived by the parents, living at 451 North Hurricane street, and by six brothers and two sisters, who are: Robert and Albert Thomas of Miami, Fla.; Charles E. Thomas of Columbus; Richard and Cecil Thomas of Indianapolis; Hobart Thomas and Mrs. Lucy E. Walden of Franklin, and Mrs. Hattie B. Kidwell, of Bargersville.
This death breaks a family circle of eleven members, the parents and nine children. Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas were married 52 years ago and are very proud of their family and the health record of the members.
