Eleanor was born in Madina del Campo, the daughter of Ferdinand I of Aragon and Eleanor of Alburquerque. She married Duarte (Edward) I, the future king of Portugal, on Sep. 22, 1428. They had nine children, five of whom survived to adulthood. She was named as regent in Duarte's will, but she was usurped by his brother Peter, Duke of Coimbra and forced into exile.
