Joe was born in Kentucky. A yDNA test links him to the 1740 Cornelius Bowman line. My personal knowledge of my Great Grandfather begins in October 1874 Indian Territory when he marries Martha "Mattie" George. Exactly what brings him to Indian Territory is still unknown (his Parent's divorce?). Extensive research of the Cornelius Bowman family lines reveals he possibly could be a son of 1821 Thomas Bowman (the only "Joseph" born about the same time) but due to an age discrepancy on his marriage certificate (1852/3) and the known birth year of Thomas Bowman's son (1848/9), we can not be sure the two are one and the same.

Joe never appears in a US Census. The first Census of Oklahoma occurs in 1900 and by that date Joe has been murdered while attending a "men's only" Poker game held at a ford (Poker Bend Ford - possibly?) of the Poteau River near what was/is called Dogtown (SW of Pocola and NW of Cameron Oklahoma bounded by Backbone Mountain on the South and the Poteau River on the West). Joe's Granddaughter (Claudia 'Bowman' Pipkin of Pocola) stated that her Grandfather's body was thrown into the Poteau River and never recovered.

In the 1910 Census, Martha (George) Bowman states she is the mother of seven children so we do not have a complete list of names but we suspect that some died in infancy.
