Bettie Marie Gifford Carpenter, 92, of Winchester, Virginia, died Sunday, March 23, 2014, in Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center. Mrs. Carpenter was born in 1922, in Washington, D.C. the daughter of the late George A. and Elsie Gifford. She was a secretary for the International Association of Machinists in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester as well as the Ladies of the Elks. She married George William Carpenter on April 29, 1950, in Washington, D.C. He preceded her in death in 1996. She is also preceded in death by her son, Kent Andrew Carpenter in 1969. Surviving are her husband's nieces, Dorothy Ann Creech of Sykesville, Maryland, Neva Effenbacher of Prescott, Arizona; nephews, Marion Carpenter and wife, Judy, of Marriottsville, Maryland, Johnny Carpenter and wife, Sue, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and caregiver, Gabriele "Gabi" Pack who has lovingly cared for her for many years. A private graveside service will be held at Shenandoah Memorial Park on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Martha Miller Sims will be officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia, 22601. Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
