Alma Jewel Gates Bicknell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, Feb. 2, 2009, at the age of 94.

She graduated from Holt High School and Druid City Hospital School of Nursing and worked for Veteran's Administration Hospital in Lyons, New Jersey and Tuscaloosa, Ala. She was the daughter of the Late Rev. William Henry Gates and Minnie Lee Gates, who raised her from the age of three after the death of her biological mother, Pearl McMinn.

Alma truly lived for her family, her late husband of 66 years Alfred Harrison Bicknell, Jr., her daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Eric Strong, her grandchildren Stacy Coddington and Kyle Strong, great-grandchildren Noah and Ashton, her brother and five sisters, and many nieces and nephews. She made all of them feel special, and she was always there to lend a helping hand.

Alma was a talented quilter and made over one hundred quilts during her lifetime, which are treasured by family and friends.
