GATHERED TO HIS FATHERS

"Mathias W. Kenney died at his residence, 839 Emerson Street, of bronchitis at 11:05 pm last night, after an illness of about a year. Deceased was born in County Limerick, Ireland on 13 October 1844. He emigrated with his family to Canada when he was two years of age. He was raised and married in Canada. In October 1883 he removed with his family to this city. He engaged at his trade, that of a carpenter, at which he was an expert workman. Subsequently he engaged in the grocery business, following it for about two years, when he again went to work at his trade, continuing it until he became unable through illness to attend to his business. He was the father of 13 children, 11 of whom, with his wife, surviving him.

"Mr. Kenney was a man to whom know was to admire, a loving husband and father, a good neighbor and a social, genial gentleman, who made friends with all whom he became acquainted and retained them afterward. Good natured, always looking on the bright side of all things, it was a pleasure to meet him. Companionable at all times, it was at his home, surrounded by his interesting family, he was at this best. Fond of company, he greeted friends at his fireside with a hearty good will, which made them feel at home at once, and always striving to make them feel at home he never failed in the undertaking. Fond of society, of music, of wit and jollity, no one ever visited him that they did not leave his door with a desire to come again, and the writer recalls many visits paid to Mr.Kenney and his family as among the brightest recollections he has to cherish. Although he has been ailing a long time, and relatives and friends have feared he would not recover, his death will come with a shock to many, and it will be difficult to realize that he who was buoyant and hopeful to the last, has passed away, and a cloud of sorrow, of more than passing import, will fall upon many who were proud to number themselves among his friends. Unostentatious, ever friendly, even tempered and jovial, a good husband, a kind father, a good neighbor, a true friend and withal, a good citizen, what prouder epitaph can be written for him. His wife and children will be recipients of many words of sympathy in their bereavement, which will ease but not obliterate the wound that time alone can heal. Deceased was an honored member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed. but it will probably be held Tuesday."
