Alva Charles "Chuck" O'Dell, 83, passed away peacefully July 26, 2014, at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Chuck was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Commerce, Okla., son of Gordon and Alveen O'Dell. He was the only son, between older sisters, Lucille and Gordene, and younger sisters, Joan and Patty. After moving with his family to Oregon and graduating from Portland's Benson High School in 1947, Chuck began an impressive career as a carpenter. In four decades, he worked for Donald M. Drake and P&C Construction on hundreds of projects, including the KOIN Tower, Lloyd Center, Clackamas Town Center and Niketown.

He was drafted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952, and proudly served two years. In 1957, he married the love of his life, Judy Whittington. After building their home in Milwaukie, the couple was blessed with sons, David Charles, Douglas Brian and Dean Bradley. Chuck was extraordinarily generous to those in his community. A charter member of Oak Hills Presbyterian Church, he was constantly helping those in need and using his skills whenever he saw an opportunity. Until health problems intervened, he volunteered weekly with his wife at Legacy Meridian Park Hospital and The Portland Center for the Performing Arts. He will be dearly missed.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, David, Doug and Dean; sisters, Lucille Steinhaeuer, Joan Gordon and Patricia Stocke; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at Oak Hills Presbyterian Church. Remembrances may be sent to Oak Hills Presbyterian Church.
