Dr. James A. Metcalf, M.D., age 67, of Paducah, passed away quietly on Thursday the 31st of July, 2014 at his residence. Dr. Metcalf's extended and exemplary struggle with mortal illness will remain a vivid demonstration of love for precious life and time in this world, as well as of absolute faith in far greater things beyond the veil of death.

Dr. Metcalf was born on the 19th of December, 1946 in Oak Ridge, TN. His father, one of so many hero soldiers; his mother, one of so many hero nurses- both represented well what has become known as our greatest generation.

Dr. Metcalf graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School in 1965. He then attended Northwestern University for an undergraduate degree. In 1969, he entered into the Northwestern University Medical School. After medical school, he completed a neurology residency at UCLA and a neurophysiology fellowship in Arizona. During this time he also served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lt., honorably discharged in 1976.

Dr. Metcalf returned to Paducah in 1979 and for the next 45 years practiced community based general neurology and sleep medicine. During those decades of service, he became a pillar of Paducah's medical and scientific community. He was well known for valuable and lifesaving insights, dedicated and tireless service, a nurturing and energetic patient advocate. He was also well known to be quick with a joke, to spread smiles and humor in such a way as to put patients and doctors alike at ease.

He was a member of Lone Oak First Baptist Church and was baptized there in 2013.

Dr. Metcalf is survived by his wife, Debbie, sons; Reid, Cameron and Baron and by his grandchildren Haley, Ellee, Michael and Mason and a brother Dr. John Metcalf, M.D. of Metropolis, IL.

He was predeceased by his father, John Allen Metcalf and his mother Lois Metcalf Willett.

Services will be held at Lone Oak First Baptist Church on Monday, August 4, 2014, with visitation from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Memorial Services at 6:00 PM. Rev. Dan Summerlin will officiate the memorial.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3140 Parisa Drive, Paducah, KY 42003 or the Green Beret Foundation, 18756 Stone Oak Parkway, Suite #200, San Antonio, TX 78258.
