Mrs. Marie Elliott Nelson, age 83, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Hospice House of Rutherford County following a period of declining health. Marie was born in McDowell County on January 16, 1931 to the late Burnard B. Elliott and Martha Shuford Elliott. She grew up in the Pleasant Gardens community and had many interests, among them camping and gardening, and she was also an accomplished seamstress. She was retired from the McDowell County School System as the cafeteria manager at Marion Elementary School where she was known as "Nanny Nelson". A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be affectionately remembered as "Nanny Rae". Her husband of 62 years, Myron E. Nelson, preceded her in death in August of 2012.
She leaves behind her three children, Ed Nelson and wife Ruth of Virginia Beach, VA, Elizabeth Waycaster and her husband James of Rutherfordton and John Nelson and his wife Alice of Mebane; a brother, Bob Elliott of Marietta, GA; two loving grandchildren, Brad Waycaster and his wife Isabel and Julie W. Cooley and her husband Robert; a great-grandson, Garris Cooley; and a number of step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A service in celebration of her life will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Mr. Jim Hobbs officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in a private graveside committal service at McDowell Memorial Park at a later date.
