Herbert Eugene Bergstrom passed away on August 1, 2014, at the age of 97 in Lubbock, Texas.
Herbert was born on October 16, 1916, to Phillip Bergstrom and Louise Hopf Bergstrom. He was born on a small farm in dusty Thrall, Texas. He grew up in Denton County and Ponder, Texas along with two brothers and two sisters, graduating from high school (after 11th grade). He then moved to Portales, New Mexico and worked on a farm and at a laundry.
He married his first wife, Lawanna Watson and they became parents of four children, Jimmy, Judy, Sara Nell and Mark.
Herbert surrendered to the ministry in April of 1943. "I had a definite call", he said. "I was 26 years old at the time, and it was during a January revival meeting at Bethel Baptist Church (near Portales). I had just started to witness to people about the Lord. That night during the meeting, I thought the Lord wanted me to do something, so I went forward to ask for ,prayer. When the pastor prayed for me, he asked the Lord to reveal what His will was for me. Then, clear as a bell, the Lord said He wanted me to preach. I'll never forget that experience that night."
He began his college education at Eastern New Mexico University and pasturing at Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Dora, New Mexico.
He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University and moved to Louisville, Kentucky to attend Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Eastern New Mexico University and a second Bachelor Degree in Divinity with a minor in Greek New Testament and later receiving his Doctorate in Theology from Southern Theological Seminary.
He became a Visiting Professor in Religion at ENMU from 1953-1960.
Herbert married his present wife, Sue Dunning who had three daughters, Rhonda, Dawn and Darinda.
He pastured churches at Ranchvale, Clovis and Portales before retiring in 1995 and moving to Lubbock, Texas.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Sue Bergstrom of the home in Lubbock, Texas; children; Judy (Al) Gary of Lubbock, Texas, Rhonda (Tom) Holtz of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dawn (Mark) Boney, Mark (Valerie) Bergstrom of Carrollton, Texas and Darinda (Bill) Rupp Loveland, Colorado; 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and one sister, Bernice Smith of Carbon, Texas. NOTE:
Herbert Eugene Bergstrom
Hi, Herbert was my great uncle. His sister (Doris) was my grandmother.
Their mother was Louise Hopf Bergstrom, not Petterson. That name belongs to the other person. There are 2 different people on the tombstone.
Thanks,
Dawn
