Mamie Larter was the daughter of Royal Jethro Larter and Victoria Frances Huffman. Her father came here from Great Yarmouth, England with his family at 6 years of age. He was descended from millers on both sides of his family, so when he came of age he bought land on Mill Creek, near Pinch WV and built and operated a mill there. Mamie has just given birth to twins 15 days before her death. Looking at the evidence from her death certificate as well as family histories, she probably died from Peripartum Cardiomyopathy. This is damage to the left ventricle that causes the heart to weaken and not pump blood to organs and causes various symptoms including edema which was called dropsy historically. She "fell over dead" while getting water from the well at her home. They lived on Wilson Hollow at the time which is now Wertz Avenue.

In the 1930's, Kanawha City was being developed and they began building all the small houses you still see today. Most of the cemetery was swallowed by the houses. The families were given the option of moving their loved ones to another cemetery but the multitude of people buried in the cemetery were poor and so they just removed the stones and left them there. The old stories say that the developer just threw the tombstones in the Kanawha River.
