Hastings resident Bettie J. (Wisner) Knapp, 79, of 1318 W. Sixth St. died Sunday, Nov 19, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Service at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod and the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation was at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mrs. Knapp was born Dec. 9, 1920 to Wilsey R. and Carrie (Russell) Wisner in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1938 and from Hastings College in 1940. From 1940-41 she taught instrumental music at Deweese. On May 22, 1942, she married Donald L. Knapp at Paine Field Air Base in Everett, Wash. From 1942-44 she lived in Bremerton, Wash., where she taught at George Dewey High School and worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. She taught private instrumental music lessons since 1945 in Hastings. She also taught at Hastings St. Cecilia High School for nine years and for one year at the Kenesaw Public Schools.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Church Circles, Methodist Church Brass Choir and First United Methodist Orchestra in the 1930's. She was a member of the Maverick Band, Hastings "Dime" Symphony, Jane Griffith All Girl Dance Band, Hastings College Band, Friendly Dozen Extension Club, YWCA of Adams County, National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary, Nebraska Band Masters, Music Educators National Conference, Community Concert Association, Pinochle Club, Election Board, National Associated of Retired Federal Employee, Order of the Eastern Star and La Danza Dance Club. She was grand marshal of the Hastings College Melody Roundup Parade in 1968. She also played music at area memorial services.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Cindy Burham of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, Canada; two sons, Donald L. Jr. of Lexington and Gerald W. of Hastings; one sister, Carolyn Cullip of Aurora, Colo.; two brothers J.R. of North Platte and Richard of Hastings; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the church or Hastings College Music Department.
