Barton, Walter H. Walter H. Barton, 89 years of age, entered into eternal life July 2, 2014 at his home. Born in Chicago on the south side, and most proud to be an AMERICAN, was Walter Barton the son of Helene and Walter Barton. He was raised by Helene till she married Rex in 1936. He met Roseland about the same time. His participation in ROTC at Tilden High School (all boys) was the start of his uniform careers. He enlisted in the Army during World War II, serving in combat for over two years in North Africa and Italy. After the war, Walt was a guard for the Atomic Energy Commission and also at the Ford Aircraft engine division. His favorite job was working for the Pullman Company since Walt had always loved trains. Roseland and Walter met up again after the war on September 23, 1945. He came to dinner and never left. They married in August 1946. They moved to Tinley Park in 1950. Also in late 1950 he was recalled to active duty and served in the Korean Conflict. Back in uniform! In 1958 he became a police officer in Tinley Park, Illinois, rising to the rank of LT. After retiring in 1978, he moved to Phoenix to play golf which he did almost every day for 30 some years. When not playing golf he spent time working with his model trains. He also spent time helping his son Bart refurbish and restore a Pullman car he and Rex had worked on at the Pullman shops in 1947. In the spring of 2014 Walt donated his backyard Garden Railroad to the Cordon's Children Hospital at Banner Desert. Walt and Roseland first attended Mountain View the first Sunday worship was held on the property. They became members a few months later. Walt worked as the verger at the church until the job interfered with his golf game. His love of trains had him join the Arizona Railway Museum as a charter member. Walt was a Life Time member of the VFW Post 2791 in Tinley Park, IL. He was most active in the 361st Infantry Regiment Association. Walt is survived by his wife Roseland of 67+ years; son Richard (Bart) and wife Jane; son Roger and wife Connie; daughter, Susan and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Joana, Sarah and husband Tony, and Mark; great-grandchildren, Mary, Sophia, Michael and many step grand and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arizona Railway Museum, Mountain View Lutheran Church, or Hospice of the Valley. A Celebration of Walt's Life will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 South 48th Street, Phoenix, AZ. 85004. Arrangements entrusted to Tempe Mortuary.
