Martha Joanna Williams Arrington was the first wife of John Drabb Arrington. They divorced and he remarried. He died in Union Co., Arkansas. Martha Joanna Williams Arrington did not remarry but raised her family on her own. Between 1830-1840 Joanna Arrington removed with her children to Wanilla, Lawrence Co., MS where she lived until 1854-1855 after which she and other family members took up the request of her son William Arrington who had gone to California in 1849 to come there. They went by ship from New Orleans to the Isthmus of Panama and were in San Francisco on 28 Mar 1855.
Cemetery records show she died 08 Jul 1871 at age 74yrs, 6months, 13 days in San Francisco. She was born Nash Co., North Carolina.
Burial was initially in Laural Hill Cemetery in San Francisco but when Laura Hill Cemetery was forced to be removed from San Francisco the burial remains were moved to Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Gardens. The cemetery records there show the grave of Joanna Williams (Drake) Arrington was removed from Laurel Hill Cemetery to Cypress Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in 1941 and that her burial in a vault with other burials under a grass-covered mound within the cemetery. The section is called Laurel Hill Mound and has a memorial plaque for those buried there.
