Mary Tryon Gortner, 96, of Orrville, passed peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2014, at Altercare of Nobles Pond in Canton.

Mary was born March 17, 1918, near North Lawrence, to C. Clyde and Effie (Singer) Hollinger. Except for three years spent in Delaware and New Jersey (1940-1942), she lived her entire life in the North Lawrence area, until moving to Orrville in 1982.

She graduated from Massillon Washington High School in 1936, and was a correspondent for the Massillon Evening Independent, Dalton Gazette and The Daily Record for 25 years. She then joined the staff of the Evening Independent as a suburban news writer, working part-time for over 13 years.

She was married to Calvin C. Tryon for 45 years before his death on December 28, 1982. She married the Rev. Clayton C. Gortner on February 24, 1990, in Orrville. He died on December 26, 2004.

Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Orrville, where she was active in the Priscilla Circle and the former Christian Culture Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the former Orrville Research Club and the Orrville Music Club. Mary was a 50-year member of the Legacy Chapter #596 of the Order of the Eastern Star, formerly Canal Fulton Chapter, and an honorary member of the former Orrville Chapter (now Shreve Chapter), both of which she served as organist for many years. While residing in North Lawrence, she taught piano for 10 years and was a 50-year member of the Chapel of the Cross, through its transitions from the United Brethren Newman Creek Chapel, Evangelical United Brethren, to the present United Methodist Chapel of the Cross.

Surviving are two sons, Calvin C. (Anita) Tryon of Brookfield and Phillip G. (Robin) Tryon of Massillon; daughters, Karen (Gary) Gettel-Bell of Jericho, Vermont, and Port Charlotte, Florida, and Rebecca (Michael) Andres of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, Timothy (Debbie) Tryon of Richville, Mark (Colleen) Tryon of North Canton, Kathleen (Michael) Burnett of Magnolia, Ken Tryon and Curt Tryon, both of Richville, Greg (Becky) Gettel of Arlington, Massachusetts, Dr. Gretchen Gettel of Delft, Netherlands, and Alex (Liz) Magg of Cincinnati; nine great-grandchildren; stepson, James (Susan) Gortner of Monticello, Illinois; two step-grandsons, James and Mark Gortner of Monticello, Illinois; and five step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters in infancy and a stillborn brother.

Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Orrville on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Paula Marbury officiating. Special music will be provided by the family beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place in Pleasant View Mennonite Church Cemetery.
