Helen was born Ellene "Helen" Francis Steele to George W. Steele (1853 - 1895) and Mary Lou Easley ( 1861 - 1944). He married John Houston White on February 11, 1906, at Wise County, Texas. They had no natural children but raised Hayden Cole White who was the son of John Houston White's brother, Robert Virgel White. Helen was a school teacher. She and John came to Duncan in the 1922. She taught at Emerson School in Duncan for 42 years until 1964 at age 79.
Funeral service was held July 1, 1974, at Westside Church of Christ in Duncan by Allen Harper. Pall bearers were Glen Haws, Louis Chasteen, Talley Trawich, Louis Pettigrew, Carlos Glass, and Jim Armitstead.
