Margaret was married to William F Chapman. They were prosperous farmers and well thought of. They are the parents of Mary Frances, Thomas and Emily Susan Chapman.
She had been in and out of the asylum many times in the 1870s and was ill again in August of 1882. Their son had died earlier that summer and that was, no doubt, an addidtional stressor for her. Margaret was yet again, as was usually the case when she was symptomatic, threatening to kill her husband.
William was awake and vigilant for days on end and at last fell asleep from exhaustion. As he slept she slit his throat. Their daughters, in the next room, grew suspicious and knocked on the door and their mother warned them that if they entered she'd killed them. The girls sought the assistance of neighbors and the door was forced. Margaret was found with William's body pulled into her lap and announced she'd been engaged in a battle with Jesus Christ and the devil and that the devil had triumphed. She was sent to the asylum in Evansville and died there eleven years later.
