John I. Smith, 76, of 2113 W. Sherman Ave. died Tuesday, June 22, 1993, at his home.

Born June 16, 1917, in Tamalco to James H. and Zada Green Smith, he married Hilda E. Watson on April 25, 1970, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, John Michael of Chesterfield, Mass.; one daughter, Sandra Welch of Peoria; two stepsons, Gerald Joyner of Denver and Stephen Joyner of Peoria; two stepdaughters, Faye Reisbig of Chillicothe and Vickie Abbott of Terre Haute, Ind.; one brother, Melvin "Bill" of Caldwell, N.J.; and three sisters, Gladys Lamb, Leta Whittaker and Rita Becker, all of Greenville. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

He was employed by Caterpillar Inc. and last worked for White Farm Equipment for 18 years, retiring in 1985. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
