Edna Beatrice, the first child of Frank and Sylvia Bell, was born in Van Buren Township, Newton County, Missouri, on August 21, 1899.

She graduated from Neosho High school, attended Baylor College in Belton, TX, and earned a PhD in social work at Chicago University.

She was married three times. Her first marriage was to William Beuhler on Aug. 27, 1917, which ended in divorce after 15 years. Her second marriage was to Dr. Walter Spencer, an eye specialist. After his death in 1962, she married Herbert "Barney" Hackney, a Dallas salesman. Their marriage only lasted a short time due to her untimely death in October 1966.
