James LaVerne Christensen, 80, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, MI.

He was born July 23, 1933, to Anker Christensen and Opal (Stever) Christensen in Superior, Nebraska.

James L. Christensen grew up in Rawlins, Wyoming, where he was graduated from high school and attended college before serving in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Lucas in Sault Ste. Marie, when he met Gloria Stain. They were married April 9, 1955, at Pickford Presbyterian Church.

He was employed with the roads and grounds department at Kincheloe Air Force Base, from the early 1950s until the base closed in the late 1970s. He worked general maintenance and then became supervisor of the golf course and ski hill affiliated with the base. After the Air Force base closed, Mr. Christensen transferred to the Michigan Department of Corrections as assistant recreation director. After retiring from the State of Michigan, he worked for several years as clubhouse manager at Munoscong Golf Course, and organized the activities of the Men's Senior League.

Mr. and Mrs. Christensen lived in Arizona during the winter months for many years.

He was a member of the New Horizons Church of the Nazarene. He served on the board of directors for Munoscong Golf Association, since it was organized in 1965.

He enjoyed every sport, and was active in golf, bowling, horseshoes, bocce ball, pool, and softball. He also enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers fan. He had a wonderful singing voice and enjoyed singing. He sang with the Vocal Majority and with two choirs in Arizona, as well as in church.

He was survived by his wife, Gloria Christensen; a daughter and her family, Terri and Alan Shopshire of Monroe; two sons and their families, Steven and Katherine Christensen and Gary and Julie Christensen, both of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren, Jason Christensen, Tyler Christensen, Aaron and Amy Greenleaf, Megan and Scott Davidson, Amanda Shopshire, Breanna Shopshire, Brandon Christensen, Joshua Christensen, and Scott Portale, and great-grandchildren, Haylie, Cayd, Mara, and Emma. He was also survived by a sister and her family, Doris and Wendell Lehr of California; brothers-in-law and their families, Orville Stain, Jim and Sandy Stain, Ed and Brenda Stain, and Everett Eagle; sisters-in-law and their families, Phyllis and Don Anderson, Deb and Steve Wallis, and Sharon and Edward Piroska; a special niece, Carol Densmore, and many other nieces and nephews.
