S/Sgt.Joseph Gisavage was with the 496th Bomber Squadron, 344th Bombardment Group stationed at Stanstead, England in World War 2. On the 10th June 1944 on a bombing mission over the Cherbourg Peninsula his aircraft was hit by flak and went down near the town of Valognes, France with the loss of all her crew he was 24yrs old. S/Sgt.Gisavage is buried at the American Military Cemetery,St Laurent sur Mer,France. Plot A, Row 10,Grave 7. He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. I 'adopted' his grave and other crew members buried close by, so that they will always be remembered. I try to go to France every year as a tribute to them and the sacrifice they made and even if this is not possible they are always in my thoughts. In 2003 a memorial was dedicated to the crew of this aircraft, in the village of Magneville,France. On the 60th Anniversary I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the memorial service held on the 6th June, it was a very moving experience where the people, young and old, paid tribute to these men and also the crew and paratroopers of a C47 which also crashed in the area on D Day with the loss of four crew and eighteen paratroopers.Today, in this sometimes awful world, we still have men and women who are prepared to put their lives on the line so that others will be safe. In the military, law enforcement, fire service and ordinary citizens who each and every day put themselves at risk. Please remember them all in your prayers and never ever forget that you are free today because of their sacrifice.
