K. Persis (Graves) Goldthwaite
SHELBURNE -- Robert A. "Spud" Goldthwaite, 77, of 256 Little Mohawk Road, died Saturday (1-27-07) at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born in Greenfield on March 20, 1929, the son of Roy H. and K. Persis (Graves) Goldthwaite. He attended the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls.
Spud was a self-employed farmer. Always a hard working man, Spud enjoyed working outdoors. At one time he and his brother, Roy Jr., owned a small water well business drilling shallow wells for homes in the area. They also did backhoe and dozer work, as well as septic installations. Spud always enjoyed welding of any kind, fixing or creating things.
In his younger years Spud enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, and hunting. Most recently he enjoyed watching NASCAR races, vegetable gardening, family gatherings, maple sugaring, cutting brush and firewood. Survivors include his sisters, his twin, Katherine Ainsworth of Leyden, Beverly Williams of Ashfield, Arlene Patnaude of Shelburne, his brothers, Roy Goldthwaite Jr. and Richard Goldthwaite, both of Shelburne, many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will take place Saturday, February 3 at 2 p.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls.
Burial services will take place in the spring. There will be a calling hour from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Spud's name to the Shelburne Center Firefighters Association, in care of Jim Burnham, Little Mohawk Road, Shelburne MA 01370.
