MAY CHRISTINE RUBY was born July 20, 1922 in Newell, SD. She was the youngest in a family of twelve born to Richard Frederick and Adele (Schmale) Ruby. Fred and Adele homesteaded in 1909 near Zeona, SD in two separate homesteads along with their parents and several brothers and sisters on both sides of their family. She attended Spring Creek School near her home, her freshman year at Parker, SD; her sophomore year at Spring Creek School; her junior year at Sorum, and graduated from Spearfish High School. May attended Black Hills Teachers College where she earned her Teachers Certificate. She taught at White Hill School for one year, Strool School for two years, and at Dillon School for two years in Perkins County.

May was united in marriage to Cliff LeRoy Hathaway on June 9, 1944 at Bison. They began their life together on Cliff's parents' farm where they spent eleven years of happiness together. Their first born, a real little girl, all their own was born on October 24, 1946. They named her Bonita Mae "Bonnie". Then three years later their very own little son, Dennis Leroy was born on November 4, 1949. Their dream family was now complete. They went all over the prairie, the four of them, checking cattle and sheep, crops and fences. They had gardens, went visiting and playing cards with friends. The ranch life was good and provided very fond memories of happy times on the ranch.

Her husband Cliff was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Due to his health, they sold the ranch and moved to Buffalo. May worked at various and sundry part-time and full-time jobs to help keep things going. She worked in the Harding County Courthouse as a secretary, as Deputy County Superintendent of Schools, at the ASCS office, and as librarian. In 1970, she took a new job as the Business Manager of the Lemmon School District which she held for 16 years. Cliff passed away on November 10, 1973. May also worked at the Home Federal Savings and Loan, and as a bookkeeper at Arnie's Fairway in Lemmon.

She loved the location of her house on the edge of Lemmon. The trees she planted are now towering over the house. The birds, rabbits, and deer live their too, and life was good. She enjoyed the company of her dear friends and the games, Scrabble and cards. Traveling was one of her favorite things, seeing new things in new places. But most of all, her chief interest in life was her family. As a child with so many siblings, this was important to her. When she aquired her own little family, they became her life. Her home is adored with family pictures and "inspiring messages" she has written and framed.

May was called to her eternal home on Wednesday morning June 8, at her home in Lemmon at the age of 82 years, 10 months, 18 days.

Keeping her in their fondest memories are her son, Dennis Hathaway and special friend Linda Anders, Mud Butte, SD; her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Virgil Otterberg, Lemmon, SD; 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey Otterberg and his wife Debbie; Nikole and her husband Robby Tennant; Dustin Otterberg and his wife Shani; Kelly and her husband Denton McGregor, and Brady Hathaway; 9 great grandchildren, TyAnn, Chance, and Kaden Otterberg; Hope, Ashley, Beth, and Riley Tennant; Sydney and Foster Otterberg; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Orman Willey, Roseburg, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 7 brothers, Fred, Carl, Paul, Frank, William, Chris, and Richard Ruby; 4 sisters, Anna Dutton, Rose Ruby, Ruth Herald, and one sister in infancy.

Burial in Greenhill Cemetery.
