Thomas was married previously to Jaillie Busler on 26 July 1886 in Cocke County. A death certificate (#109) states Hattie (Swatzel) Reese was born 1 May 1875 and died at the age of 43 from Tuberculosis on 15 June 1918 in Cocke County. The informant, a Reese, states that her parents were Tom Swatzel and Jaley Busler and that she was buried at Fowler's Grove Cemetery in Cocke County.
