Jane first appeared and was clearly identified in the 1850 census, Robinson Twsp., Green County, Missouri and was rostered with James M. St. John and four of their children. Again, she appeared in the 1860 census, Sarcoxie, Jasper, Missouri, and was listed with James, eight of her children and what appears to be a sister-in-law or sister, Rachel Hoge(s) and Dow Hoge(s), Rachel's son. The Census reported James to be 45, Jane 43 and their children ranged in ages 4 through 19. Rachel was 49 and her son 19. Although the census indicates Jane was born in Tennessee, we believe it to have been misreported. In review of the 1880 Census, James Richardson St. John, we found a George Rutledge Hoge(s), living beside her son. We believe him to be the nephew of Jane and back traced him to his family in Virginia. There we found both Jane and Rachel.

Jane's husband, James Madison, was last identified in the 1880 Census (age 65) and living with his daughter and son-in-law, Margret J St. John "Coker" Chenoweth and John King Chenowerth. Prior to the Chenoweth marriage, Margret had married James William Coker - d. 1876, Milum Cemetery, Leadhill, Boone County, Arkansas. After his death Margaret married John King Chenoweth and moved to Benton County , Arkansas.

Jane married James Madison St. John, about 1832-33. During the marriage she bore 9 children and they were as follows:

Mary A St. John 1838 - 1860
William James St. John 1841 - 1928
Sara Melinda St. John 184 2 - 1934
David Morgan St. John 1844 - 1880
Arminda St. John 1846 - 1880
Jackson St. John 1848 - unknown
Margret Jane "Meg" St. John 1850 - 1931
James Richardson St. John 1854 - 1909
Joseph Lester St. John 1855 - 1893
