Richard's parents were from Pickens County, Alabama, but he was born in Gonzales, Texas when his family lived there for a short time. After his father's death in 1888 his mother took Richard and sisters back to Alabama, but in 1895 at the age of sixteen his mother Josephine suddenly died and he was orphaned, along with his sisters. The girls were all taken in by their aunt, Annie Acker Gates and Richard was taken by his uncle C.C. (Christopher Columbus) Acker. In 1900 at the age of 20 he worked as a salesman for his uncle in Cliftonville, Mississippi. When his sisters became older they moved to Fort Bend, County, Texas, but Richard stayed in Mississippi.
In his 30's Richard married Alena "Lena" Stansel in Mississippi and they had a son, Richard Acker, in 1913. Unfortunately, Richard died at the early age of 35 on the 27th of February, 1915, as the result of some type of mill accident, leaving his two year old son and widow.
