Charles Nelbert Cannon, a long-time resident of Armstrong, passed away on July 17, 2014 in Paxton at the age of 93.

He was born May 19, 1921 in Camden, Arkansas to the Rev. Robert H. and Brenda Troil Thornton Cannon. He married Louise Booher in Portland, Arkansas on Dec. 25, 1942. officiated.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Laurence Thornton Cannon, George Thomas Cannon, John Randolph Cannon and Robert Henry Cannon Jr. and his son-in-law, Jerry Adams.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Cannon and her husband, Garland Gibson; daughter, Celia Gorleski and her husband, Joseph; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Eventually, he applied to and was accepted to pilot training in Georgia where he became commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps. For a short while, he remained in Georgia as a pilot instructor before being assigned to the 423d Bombardment Flying Squadron, 306 Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force in Thurleigh, England. He advanced to the rank of first lieutenant while flying 35 B-17 bombing missions over Germany. He piloted his plane in the largest single bombing formation of World War II, totaling 3,000 military aircraft.
