Source Material regarding . . . . Nellie M. (Bixler-Jones) Walter
Nellie M. Walter was born in February 1887 in Kingman, Kansas, a daughter of Albert Bixler and Elizabeth Gibson. Nellie's mother Elizabeth died in 1890, not long after giving birth in 1889 to another daughter, who was named Gertrude.
According to the 1900 US census, Nellie Bixler, age 13, was living in the household of George W. and Thurza Jones, along with a five-year-old boy named Lee Bixler, listed as their adopted son. Nellie Bixler was listed as the adopted daughter of George and Thurza, who had been married for only three years and had no children of their own.
The March 1, 1905, Kansas state census revealed that Nellie, age 18, continued to live with George and Thurza Jones and the ten-year-old boy, now listed as Lee Jones.
On November 7, 1905, Nellie married Fred E. Walter in Kingman, Kansas. The marriage license listed her name as 'Nellie Jones'. In deference to both her birth parents and her adoptive parents -- and to clear up confusion regarding Nellie's maiden name -- 'Bixler-Jones' may be the more appropriate maiden name for Nellie M. Walter.
