Her mother was Emma Foll Birth July 1872 in Missouri.

Mabel's father was reportedly "Fred" Frederick Milton Barnes:
Ward family members have stated that Mabel's surname was Foll-Barnes, as her father was a Barnes neighbor in Clay Center, Kansas. Census records reflect 3 eligible Barnes boys as possible fathers (2 being Fred's brother's: Wellington, age 14 & Edgar, age 20) living near Emma Foll & her family on Dexter Street in Clay Center, KS. Fred's Families Residence on 8 June 1880 was on Fifth Street, Clay Center, Kansas; Frederick Residing with his father Horatio who was a Grocer. Fifth Street intersects with Dexter Street where Emma Foll & her parents/siblings resided (Casper Foll was a Miller & likely sold Horatio flour & meal for his store). So indeed Fred & Emma were neighbors. The data shown on one of the photo's was written by Mabel's daughter Lila Edith Ward. Though Lila has Mabel's birth year incorrect, as it should be 16 November 1887 (since Mabel was born in November, most Census records enumerate that her birth was in 1887). Also, Fred & Emma never married, so they did not settle together in Colorado, but Fred was a farmer. Fred & Hattie resided in the same general area of Kansas until his death. At the time of Emma's pregnancy Fred left Clay Center. He wound up in St George, Kansas (about 40 miles east of Clay Center). As about a month prior to the birth of Mabel, on 19 October 1887, Fred married Hattie Blood in her home town of St George, Kansas. Hattie's adoptive mother Nancy Blood, age 69, was the keeper of a Hotel in St George, where Fred possibly met Hattie, possibly as a boarder at their Hotel. It is possible that Fred did not know of Mabel's conception since he left his home in Clay Center about age 16/17 or that Fred left Clay Center so as to not marry Emma. Emma was only 14 at the time of Mabel's conception & Fred was about 17 (as 1870 US Census has Fred as being 6/12 months of age on 22 August 1870, so his birth month could not be October 19. If it were in October then he would have not been listed upon the 1870 US Census taken on August 22nd with his parents Horatio & Sarah & elder brother Edgar in Tyrone, Schuyler County, New York). Also: Fred's Father Horatio had died 30 December 1886. Fred's fathers death at age 40 must have been hard on young Fred, as well as the rest of the Barnes family; including his 3 adolescent brothers that his poor widowed mother had to watch over, provide for and care for.

Emma Foll had moved to Denver at least by 1895 (possibly much earlier). Likely to help support her daughter Mabel as dressmaker. Thereby Emma left her only daughter Mabel to be raised by Emma's parents Casper & Matilda Foll.

Mabel's Residence 1 March 1895; Age: 7; With her grandparents Casper & Matilda Foll in Clay Center, Clay, Kansas.

Mabel's Residence 1900; Age: 13; Enumerated as residing at her Uncle William Foll's household with her grandmother Matilda Foll on Dexter Street, Clay Center, Clay, Kansas.

Mabel & Emma corresponded through letters in the mail & Mabel would ask her mother to come visit her, as well as ask for clothing & shoes.

Mabel's mother Emma was a friend of Andrew Ward in Denver (since Emma & Andrew were about the same age) & that is how Mabel met Andrew. Andrew's father Calvin Tracy Ward was very well to do & Andrew was employed in his fathers Company.

Mabel married Albert P. De Laet 5 October 1907 & she reported on her 1965 naturalization papers that Albert had died in 1909.
