Solomon C. Black, of Newport, better known as S.C. departed this life on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the age of 98 at Wellington Place where he had made his home for the past several years.

S.C. was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He served as an M-I rifle expert and heavy truck driver during his military service. He was stationed at Schofield barracks in Hawaii when the infamous attack occurred. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star and an American Defense Service Ribbon with one Bronze Star for his service. He was a life time member of the American Legion Post 41 and VFW. S.C., was a member of Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church and attended faithfully until his health prevented him from attending.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Viola Samples Black the mother of his children and Tina Dalton Black; and stepson Hubert Messer; his wife Bonnie and their son, Thomas; son-in-law, John Edward Ownby; step grandchildren; Raymond Toole; Clara Patterson and Jack Stewart; sisters Lou Emma Burnett, Belle Ball, Rachael Ball and Pauline Crum; brothers, John and Leonard Black.

He is survived by his children, Mary Lou Watts and June Holt Russell both of Newport; Anna Mae Ownby of Wellford, SC; stepchildren, Josephine (Rodney) Toole of Aiken, SC; and Betty Russell of Newport; special son-in-law, Lloyd Watts. He was blessed with nine grandchildren, Russell (Nicole) Watts, Tonya Ailor; Susan H. (Ronnie) Hartsell; Laketa (Alan) Case; Jim Ownby; John (Debbie) Ownby; W. H. (Joan) Toole; Mary Ann Stewart and Joe Stewart; several great-grandchildren; great-great- grandchildren; and newborn great-great-great grandson born July 20, 2014. He is also survived by a sister, Joneta Ball.

The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to the staff of Wellington Place in Newport, Amedysis Hospice and Dr. Rual Swanson.

Funeral services will be held 8:00 pm Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Billy Ball officiating. Burial will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in Union Cemetery, with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm -8:00 pm Tuesday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral service. Manes Funeral Home in charge.
