Dave Martin was the second of four children born to Lloyd and Wanda Martin. In 1953 they moved to Pine Street in Wyandotte. The family joined St. Joseph's parish where Dave attended the parochial school and served as an altar boy. Dave's dad passed away in 1988. His sister, Debbie was a member of the first graduating class at Gabriel Richard. Dave's siblings, Greg and Trish graduated from Roosevelt High School.
In 1972 Dave married Stephanie Helder to whom he had been introduced by his sister, Trish. They had one daughter. Stephanie was killed in an auto accident in 1980. Dave's hobbies were golf, watching horse races and sports and playing cards. Dave also liked to read and was good at basketball during grade school. His favorite musician was David Bowie. He also liked the Moody Blues.
Debbie has fond memories of their childhood. Their home was east of Biddle right near the Detroit River. The back of their lot abutted a short canal where the Martin children had a small boat in the summer and played hockey in the winter.
After high school Dave worked as a pipe fitter at Great Lake Steel and was later self-employed as a painter and home repairman. In December 1992 when Debbie came home for Christmas, Dave was "deathly ill." He died at home of kidney and lung cancer a few months later.
